The combination of the kitchen sink and faucet serves as a key focal point in the Kitchen, one that is directly linked to the perception of how sanitary space is. A spotless sink blemish-free faucet can add many times their real costs to the perceived value of the toom.

Faucets & Sinks

A thorough cleaning is the first step in updating your sink and faucet. Start by removing any rust and stains.

Once cleanyou can polish a stainless steel sink with a commercial polish to bring back the shine. Youll also want to make sure the faucet is in tip-top shape by repairing any drips or leaksMost faucet repairs are easy if you have the right parts and you pay close attention to how the faucet is assembled while youre taking it apart.

Take this opportunity to clean and repair the sprayer attachment as well. But if the faucet is cracked, pitted, or can’t be repaired, youre better off replacing it. The same goes for your sink if it is noticeably chipped, discolored, or simply too beat up to be brought back to life with a thorough cleaning.

When buying a faucet, choose a decent-quality model that complements the sink and fits the style of the kitchen.
The cheapest faucets can be had for less than $50, but these scream “rental property” and ruin this easy opportunity to add a touch of quality.

You’ll find much more stylish units, and a much wider selection, in the $70 to $90 range. Faucets with a single, lever-type handle are best for the kitchen because they allow you to turn on the water with your elbow or arm when your hands are covered with cookie dough.

Keep in mind that the faucet you select must match the holes in the sink you’re using. Most have fout holes: three for the faucet and one for the sprayer (or you can use it for the dishwasher air gap or a soap dispenser).
A budget-minded sink replacement means you’ll be shopping for a stainless steel or acrylic sink. Stainless steel is the standard and most popular choice among homeowners,
primarily because they look complements a wide range of kitchen styles and the sink itself won’t chip, stain, or fade.
The price and quality of stainless steel sinks are linked to the thickness of the metal, the finish, and the overall look. Budget sinks (around $50) are made with 20-gauge or thinner steel and may or may not have sound-deadening material on the hidden outer sides of the basins.

It’s well worth upgrading to a thicker, 19-9auge or 18-gauge sink with some sound-deadening features. These are more dent-resistant and don’t sound quite as hollow and flimsy when you set dishes into the basins.
Acrylic sinks are the other option for homeowners looking to save money and create a fresh focal point in the kitchen.
You’ll find handsome models for between $85 and $100, in a variety of colors. Acrylic sinks are easy to handle because they are so lightweight. However, you have to be more careful with
them; they are easily scratched and can even melt if a hot pan is set in the basin Few improvements will have a bigger, faster payback than replacing a kitchen sink or
faucet showing signs of age and wear.
